Nous vous invitons à participer à la conférence La scène, l’histoire, le Canada (SHC), organisée par les étudiants de deuxième cycle candidats à la maîtrise ès arts et à la maîtrise en pratique théâtrale du Département de théâtre de l’Université d’Ottawa. Cette conférence multidiciplinaire et bilingue se déroulera le samedi 10 avril 2010 à la Salle académique, au 133 Séraphin Marion, sur le campus de l’Université d’Ottawa. Blood Relations de Sharon Pollock (dramaturge qui a marqué le Canada anglais par ses vives représentations sur scène de l’histoire) trace un portrait métathéâtral de Lizzie Borden, femme qui a été acquittée de l’accusation du meurtre de ses parents en 1892 à Massachusetts. Pollock taille ce personnage historique plus grand que nature par la psychologie, en faisant usage d’une séquence-temps en 1902 lors de laquelle Miss Lizzie et son amie la comédienne (Actress) recréent les événements qui ont précédé les meurtres. Le va-et-vient constant entre deux séquences-temps et l’alternance perpétuelle entre personnages présentent un défi de taille pour la metteure en scène Bronwyn Steinberg, candidate à la M.P.T. à l’Université d’Ottawa.

Pour son projet final du programme de mise en scène, Steinberg aborde cette œuvre en mettant l’accent sur le travail de chœur et de groupe – à la fois entre Miss Lizzie et Actress et dans l’ensemble des autres personnages, afin qu’ils s’allient tous physiquement à créer l’imaginaire du conte. Ce désir compulsif qu’a Actress de vouloir connaître la vérité conjure les personnages, le décor, les costumes, le son et l’éclairage tout droit de leurs souvenirs fragmentés et de leurs idées préconçues, qui sont à leur tour altérés par l’imagination et l’empathie. La « réalité » construite qui en résulte porte le spectateur à une réflexion philosophique sur la légitimité du meurtre en tant que moyen d’assurer le maintien de notre propre conception identitaire.

Blood Relations sera présenté du 6 au 10 avril 2010 à la Salle Académique de l’Université d’Ottawa, située au 133 rue Séraphin-Marion. Les participants à la conférence SHC auront droit à un billet gratuit pour la représentation du 10 avril, qui sera suivie d’une discussion avec la metteure en scène.

Blood Relations is Sharon Pollock’s (one of Canada’s most prominent “stagers of history”) metatheatrical representation of Lizzie Borden, who was accused and acquitted of the murder of her parents in Massachusetts in 1892.  Pollock delves into the psychology of this larger than life historical character, using a 1902 frame of Miss Lizzie and her Actress friend reenacting the events leading up to the murders. The free-flow of action between the two settings and the quick changes in characters present an excellent challenge to director Bronwyn Steinberg, an MFA Candidate at the University of Ottawa.

For her final project of the directing program, Steinberg approaches this piece with a strong emphasis on the ensemble and on choral movement – between Miss Lizzie and the Actress and among the actors that play the other characters in the story, so that they are all physically part of the same imagination that is retelling the story. The Actress’s “compulsion to know the truth” (Pollock, Blood Relations, 1980) conjures up the characters, the set and costumes, the sound and lighting out of memory and preconception, and they are transformed by imagination and empathy.  The resulting “truth” challenges the audience to look inward to see if they too “would have killed to maintain [their] sense of self.” (Pollock, Calgary Herald, September 2009)

Blood Relations runs from April 6 to 10, 2010 in the Academic Hall, 133 Séraphin Marion at the University of Ottawa. SHC Conference participants have free admission to the Saturday, April 10 performance that will be followed by a talk-back with the director.

Le Département de théâtre de l’Université d’Ottawa invite les étudiants de deuxième cycle de tout champ d’études à soumettre une proposition de communication pour sa conférence inaugurale bilingue qui aura pour titre La scène, l’histoire, le Canada (SHC). La conférence se déroulera sur le campus de l’Université d’Ottawa le samedi 10 avril 2010.

Nous acceptons présentement des propositions de communication de 300 mots. Vous pouvez choisir de présenter pendant les 20 minutes allouées soit une communication, un projet créatif ou une représentation à petite échelle qui traite d’un ou de plusieurs aspects du thème choisi. Voici quelques questions qui pourraient servir de sujets aux panels de la conférence :

• Par quels moyens l’histoire canadienne est-elle mise en scène, présentée ou interprétée dans des espaces conventionnels et non conventionnels ?
• Comment les artistes, écrivains, dramaturges ou historiens ont-ils réagi aux événements qui ont marqué la première décennie du 21^e siècle ?
• Est-ce un devoir des artistes du Canada de présenter sur scène leur propre histoire ?
• Comment les œuvres s’appuyant sur l’histoire canadienne locale se transposent-t-elles à l’extérieur de leur milieu d’origine, que ce soit à un autre endroit au pays ou dans le monde ?
• Quelles réflexions ont été formulées par des metteurs en scène, historiens ou artistes contemporains en ce qui concerne l’interprète, la scène ou le public ?
• Comment la relation entre l’acteur et le spectateur évolue-t-elle sur la scène canadienne ?
• Comment la cyber technologie et les autres formes d’intermédialité ont-elles affecté la prestation et la présentation de l’histoire canadienne ?

Le coût de participation à cette conférence, qui durera une pleine journée, est de 15 $ par délégué(e), ce qui comprend deux pauses-café, un dîner buffet et un billet pour le spectacle Blood Relations, œuvre de Sharon Pollock, mis en scène pour le Théâtre de la Licorne par Bronwyn Steinberg, candidate à la M.P.T.

Staging History in Canada

The Department of Theatre at the University of Ottawa invites graduate students from all disciplines to submit abstracts to its inaugural bilingual graduate conference entitled Staging History in Canada (SHC). This student-run conference takes place at the University of Ottawa campus, Saturday, April 10, 2010.

We are now accepting 300-word abstracts for 20-minute papers, creative presentations, and small-scale performances that address the theme of the conference.  If you have any special technical or staging requirements, please specify them in your abstract. Proposed panel topics include, but are not limited to:

• How is Canadian history performed/displayed/interpreted in conventional and unconventional spaces?
• How have writers/artists/playwrights/historians responded to events that have shaped the first decade of the twenty-first century?
• Do artists in Canada have a responsibility to stage their own history?
• How do works based on local Canadian history translate outside of their region of origin, whether elsewhere in Canada or abroad?
• What commentaries/reflections have been made by contemporary Canadian directors/historians/artists regarding the performer, the stage and/or the audience?
• How has the relationship between actor and spectator evolved on the Canadian stage?
• How has cyber-technology and/or other forms of intermediality affected the display/performance of Canadian history?
